Veteran's Day..... Lest We Forget

In Flanders Field
by John MacRae

In Flanders field the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the Dead.  Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  2. A beautiful sentiment behind this old chestnut of a poem ... we owe so much to our Vets, alive and fallen. Is your photo taken here in New England? I wondered if it was taken at Cathedral in the Pines or atop Pack Monadnock Mt. ...

  3. Yes, I am hoping we have a large turn out tomorrow for our ceremony. The weather is finally improving here. It seems like every year the weather on Nov 11 is cold, windy and wet yet I am so stirred to see the Veterans still show up for the parade.

  4. A beautiful tribute.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

  7. My mother often recited this poem to us when we were children. My Dad was a WW2 and Korean war vet and saw action overseas. Thankfully he returned home safely or I or my siblings would be here :)

  11. What a beautiful picture and prose. Do you live in NH? I've never been there but I have always loved that state. I'm definitely going to make that chutney for Thanksgiving! Thanks for visiting my blog but mine is shabby compared to yours! I can't wait to "catch up"! Thanks for the recipe!
