The directions are simple. Add two heaping teaspoons of the taco seasoning along with 1 cup of water to one pound of cooked hamburg. Simmer until all the water has evaporated.
Poor dietary habits die hard so I just couldn't resist adding 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt to the two pounds of hamburg that we always use.
Ingredients:
- 4 tbsp. chili powder
- 3 tbsp. paprika ( I used half smoked paprika )
- 3 tbsp. cumin
- 2 tbsp. plus 2 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
Give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.
It is very pretty. Since I am always using this kind of mix, I will be making some. Don't you just love Kosher salt? It is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fantastic idea. I always wonder what are actual content of every pre-packed Taco season. Now, knowing that I can actually make the seasoning myself, this is definitely a better idea.
ReplyDeleteWe go through a lot of taco seasoning. I will pin this under my "things to make" so I don' t forget. But have to do that tomorrow... I don't know how to pin yet from my iPad and I'm not getting out of bed!

I am going to give this a try. How low can I lower the salt with out ruining the taste?
ReplyDeleteSounds great, homemade is always best! It's helps use up the spices you already have to keep them fresh too:@)
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I've been directed to avoid processed foods, and have been longing for tacos but didn't know quite how to do that without the ubiquitous yellow packet. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou gotta be careful with the chili powder if you are trying to cut back on the salt though. Check the label as a lot of times the second ingredient is salt!
ReplyDeleteI make a salt free taco seasoning that is similar to this. Once you use the fresh stuff it's hard to eat the packet mix again!
I love to find homemade recipe for mixes. I also try to reduce salt intake; this ine is going in Pinterest.

Looks good. I like a little salt but not overload like they have in some products. Great idea to make your own seasoning so you can control it. Will give your blend a try, thanks!
ReplyDeleteJust the colors make me so happy. Cutting back on salt is so hard. I buy everything low or no sodium add and season it to my taste. I feel like I am cutting out a little more each time. I keep both kosher and sea salt on hand. Hugs! Bonnie
ReplyDeleteWe use something similar in our "house seasoning"....and yes, lowering sodium is a battle..it is everywhere...
ReplyDeleteHere's to you!
Nancy
Beautiful colours!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week end
I'm so glad you posted this, packaged taco seasoning is so high in sodium! I would use this in scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes...you name it.
ReplyDeleteOle! What a great idea to make your own taco seasoning! Love the fact there's no salt!
ReplyDeleteI love homemade spice mixes. The amount of sodium in the commercial varieties is mind bending. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteGreat! I was looking for a taco seasoning recently but had forgotten about it. Just started to learn more about mexican food.
ReplyDeleteHiya... thanks for lovely comment on my blog... always makes my day when someone makes something ive concocted! especially when it was all thrown together in an oven dish!!... as you show here, it's all about the experimentation with flavours, strengths and tastes!... happy days x
ReplyDeleteI like your blog here, it's very nice. I like to mix my own spice blends too to control the salt. I have bookmarked this one.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm late to see this, but that is brilliant! I tend not to mix my own spice blends because well, I'm lazy, but I do have all these spices already, so now I know what to reach for when I want taco seasoning!
ReplyDeleteHi, just found your blog through a link from another - it's terrific!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am on an anit-salt crusade, but it's hard when the husband loves the stuff. We make our own seasonings, too, but our favorite spice store is very salt aware. The name is Penzey's Spices. It's a family business - you can find some brick and mortars around the country and you can also order online, but then you don't have the pleasure of sniffing every sample jar as you go through the store. This isn't the place to list my favorites, there are too many! But you can't go wrong with any of them. The freshness of their herbs is amazing and I think the prices are decent, unless you compare to the sad bulk bags in the grocery.
